The 2009 Whereis® Australian Surf Life Saving ChampionshipsScarborough Beach Tuesday March 17th -Sunday March 22nd 2009 For accommodation in Perth book early and book online at Perth Accommodation For the last two years Scarborough Beach has been the home of the Whereis® Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, bringing together more than 6,000 competitors and officials from all over the country.
Returning to the sunset coast for the third and final year, competitors are gearing up to farewell Scarborough Beach in style with six days of action-packed competition set to bring the beach alive.
From 17-22 March 2009, the best surf lifesavers from around the country will converge on Scarborough Beach for the Whereis® Aussies.
Since moving to Scarborough Beach in 2007, the Whereis® Aussies has delivered some historic moments, including home grown Ironwoman Alicia Marriott (City of Perth) becoming the first ever Western Australian to win the Australian Open Ironwoman crown.
Adding to this year’s excitement will be the Australian Interstate Championships, to be held in conjunction with the 2009 Whereis® Aussies. The event is a long standing Surf Life Saving tradition that is a state versus state battle, with the best competitors from each region putting it all on the line for state glory. It is usually a two-way tussle between the Queensland maroons and the New South Wales blues – but on their home turf Western Australia will prove to be tough and may even have what it takes to win the overall title for the first time. This year the event will be held on Wednesday 18 March.
The Aussies marks the climax of a busy season for surf lifesavers. Clubs and individuals pit themselves against the elements and their peers to prove they are the best rescue and resuscitation outfits, ironmen, swimmers, boat crews, march past teams, ski paddlers, board riders and runners. Scarborough Beach is just 14 kilometres north west of Perth and is a playground for any beach enthusiast, forming part of Western Australia's 12,000km of pristine coastline.
