St John's Church FremantleFremantle AttractionsThe exisiting St Johns Church Fremantle replaced the original, and first church, built on the site in 1843 which was a stone building. The existing church was designed by architects W. Smith of Adelphi in London in 1875 and the foundation stone laid a year later in 1878 by Perth's Bishop Hale. It was built by Vincent, J.J. Harwood and Son and consectrated on 4th July 1882. St. John's Church Fremantle is located in "The Square" at the corner of Adelaide and Queen streets. An atmosphere of Divine Presence is evident as you enter the building and take in the proportional space of grandeur and beauty. Interesting stories lie behind the magnificent stained glass, the triptych behind the altar, the commanding brass lectern in the shape of an eagle and the plaques set around the walls. A plaque to the survivors of HMAS Perth lost at sea in 1942 is placed in the sanctuary and a special commemorative service is held each year in March.
