Fremantle Town Hall

Frematle Attractions

The Fremantle Town Hall was opened on the 22nd June 1887 to coincide with Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. It took two years to construct by builder E.Keane. Fremantle Town Hall was restored and re-opened in 1986 in a ceremony officiated by the honourable R.J.L. Hawke, Prime Minister of Australia.

The Freemantle Town Hall was initially planned, and with a different two story design, for the corner of South Terrace and Essex Street but the council decided that a more central location was prefered. In 1876 the Trustees of St Johns Church offer Fremantle Council a part of what was then known as St John's Square. The council proceeded with the purchase and plans submitted by Melbourne architects Grainger and E'Ebro were approved.
