It took two years to construct by builder E.Keane. Fremantle Town Hall was restored and re-opened in 1986 in a ceremony officiated by the honourable R.J.L. Hawke, Prime Minister of Australia. The Freemantle Town Hall was initially planned, and with a different two story design, for the corner of South Terrace and Essex Street but the council decided that a more central location was prefered. In 1876 the Trustees of St Johns Church offer Fremantle Council a part of what was then known as St John's Square. The council proceeded with the purchase and plans submitted by Melbourne architects Grainger and E'Ebro were approved.
