Discover Perth Accommodation Beside Attractive Swan River, Western Australia

Perth, Western Australia is the state capital, and with 1.5 million inhabitants is the fourth most populous city in Australia. Perth enjoys a warm and sunny Mediterranean type climate. It is situated on the western edge of Australia, on the Indian Ocean coastline. The picturesque Swan River runs through the city centre of Perth, and many of the tourist activities in this attractive city are centred on the river. This short Perth accommodation article reviews some of the things which make Perth an attractive city to visit, and quickly reviews two hotels which both enjoy pleasant locations beside the Swan River.

Perth, founded 1829 was the first major settlement by Europeans in the western part of Australia. The settler ship was the Parmelia, captained by James Stirling, and it arrived at the beginning of June in that year. Since that date Western Australia's Foundation Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in June. The city was named Perth at the behest of British Colonial Secretary, Sir George Murray, who was a native of Perth in Scotland, and Perthshire's MP in the British House of Commons. In 1856 Perth became a city, by order of Queen Victoria.

Many tourist haunts and activities are centred on the attractive Swan River, which flows through the heart of the city. Many visitors explore the river with guided trips on the many cruise boats which sail the river. Some cruise boats have dining and music. Others explore the paths and cycleways around the river, and in Kings Park and Botanic Gardens. There are many good places to just stop and have a picnic, or just watch the river and the city.

The top shopping areas in Perth are probably in Barrack Street, in Raine Square, in Forest Chase and in Kings Street. There are also many shopping malls, such as Hay Street Mall and Murray Street Mall. The souvenirs on sale include Aboriginal arts and crafts, and of course there are also beach and swimwear, jewellery and technology items such as cameras and MP3 players.

The city as a whole has excellent public transport links, which can be used to reach attractions in the outer suburbs. The Old Mill and the Perth Zoo are reached by ferry from the city centre.

The Duxton Hotel with five stars, and the Crowne Plaza Hotel (4.5 stars) are both located in the centre of Perth, beside the Swan River. The Duxton is on St. Georges' Terrace, one of the main streets in the central area, and is just next to the Perth Concert Hall, in addition to overlooking the Swan River. From the Duxton it is a short walk of just a few minutes to some of the busiest areas of Perth for nightlife, restaurants and shopping. The riverside location is also good for starting to explore the many riverside walks and city centre parklands.

There are about three hundred rooms in the Duxton, many have views over the river. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, cable TV with movie-on-demand service, air conditioning and mini-bar. The Duxton's residents have use of amenities such as a steam room and sauna, and fully equipped gym.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel is also beside the Swan River. The Crowne's 189 rooms have contemporary style decor and furnishings. The hotel's restaurant (The Gusti Restaurant) has al fresco dining, and the hotel has gym and swimming pool (rooftop) available for its guests.
